Beginning Painting
Arts 301 – Fall 2017
William Fowler

The way in which materials and techniques are used in painting plays an important role in the ability of the artist to critically convey specific processes of thought, emotions, and meaning. The empirical combination of shapes, colors, lighting, and shadows are also critical in the composition of a painting as a whole.

This course explored the basic elements and principles of art and how they relate to artistic expression within the construct of paint. Additionally, the course taught various topics and vocabulary in painting, such as line, tone, perspective, proportion, and composition.

During the course, I was able to carefully understand how colors merge together and interact with one another in an intermerging construct to formulate flow. I investigated different techniques of painting and learned how to make use of different materials and types of paint.
